Dunedin is a place where there exist all different sorts of street art no matter wherever you go. Chances are, when you turn a corner and go into a different street, you will run into some type of street art on the wall. Throughout my stay i Dunedin the past 6 weeks, I was able to pinpoint some of these artworks while walking around the town. It was fascinating to explore around the town trying to find new street art; all were drawn with high quality skills and in magnificent sizes that made me go in awe whenever I ran across one.
Of all these different street art that I ran across one that I found that specifically resonated with me was the Fintan Mangee’s “Chasing the Thin White Cloud” (the artwork is located in 149 Rattray Street).

The artwork depicts 3 children that are running around trying to catch a cloud with a net. The artwork itself is enormous as it spans across 3 stories high. It also uses point colors on the children in order to make the picture point out to people in order to grab their attention. However, what caught my eyes were not its magnificent size and quality of the art – it was the meaning behind the painting that I was able to deduce from it. When I first came across the art, I felt as if the children were trying to catch the cloud, aka their “dreams” with the net. As a child, you have so many different dreams and goals you want to achieve and also have spontaneous and creative ideas that adults miss to have. I thought that the art depicted this idea of which the children are trying to achieve their dreams by catching the cloud.

As I stared at the drawing, I got another message from the drawing: the artist trying to tell our not to forget about our dream that we once had and to continue chasing for it. It was very inspiring for me to look at this artwork. As street art is something that we see for only seconds while passing, the artist try their best to make it be eye-catching and meaningful. For me, Mangee did an amazing job of bringing this creativity to life while also influencing the people to never give up on their dreams.
